Dedicated to our responsibility
Tongole Wilderness Lodge is committed to operating the business in the most environmentally friendly way possible.
Tongole’s mission to raise prospects and benefit the community whenever possible, meant that it was imperative to use local tradesmen in the construction of the lodge. Over 100 jobs were created during the two-year period of construction.
The lodge continues to employ a growing team of over 30 staff from the local community providing significant employment and training opportunities in a very poor region of Malawi.
All building materials used during the construction of the lodge were locally sourced and sustainable and the lodge was thoughtfully designed so that it blends in with the natural surroundings and remains unobtrusive to the wildlife.
Hot running water and 240v power is generated by a self sustainable solar-powered system.
Low impact safari activities
Tongole Wilderness Lodge advocates low environmental impact activities to ensure the protection of the area. Most of the safari activities at the lodge are foot-based or river-based so that guests can enjoy the unexploited wilderness in a peaceful manner. Guests enjoy observing rather than chasing the wildlife.
Wherever possible, food is locally sourced.
The Tongole Foundation
The Tongole Foundation was set up both to create a sustainable business (and with it crucial employment opportunities) and a children’s education charity, providing support to local schools. Find out more about The Tongole Foundation.
